Description:
The Office of Human Resource Development is a unit under the University Office Human Resource. Its responsibilities include training development for all university employees and organizing campus wide events. The Cultural Linguistic Services unit specializes in providing trainings and services to limited English speaking employees.

History:
The Cultural Linguistic Services has been providing translation, interpretation and trainings University of Wisconsin-Madison limited English speaking employees since 2001. In 2005, our office collaborated with the University of Wisconsin-Madison Linguistic Department on the Hmong Literacy, Language and Jobs Project to assist new Hmong refugees recently arrived from Thailand to teach them workplace English. In that project, we provided them tutors to work on their conversational English in addition to the ESL class. The project was very successful. All the participants were able to transition to employment and half of them were able to communicate with their co-workers and supervisors. Therefore, we felt that if we could help those who recently came to improve their English we should use it to help our employees at the University.
