The Madison Area Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Coalition works to create a sustainable, just, and locally based food system in Southern Wisconsin by promoting and supporting CSA farms and coordinating community and farmer education programs about the benefits of locally, sustainably grown foods.
Description:
Each year hundreds of area households learn about CSA through MACSAC's annual events including the CSA Open House (March) the Empty Bowls Dinner (October) that raises awareness and funds for our Partner Shares Program. The Partner Shares Program is a unique initiative aimed at reducing hunger, improving nutrition, and supporting local farmers in South Central Wisconsin. Partner Shares provides financial assistance for households with low-incomes to receive fresh, organic produce from local CSA farms by providing matching funds toward the cost of CSA shares. We also offer educational workshops and cooking demonstrations, and distribute our food book From Asparagus to Zucchini: A Guide to Cooking Farm Fresh Seasonal Produce. MACSAC is continually seeking to strengthen the network of growers who support the goal of creating a food system that closely connects eaters with the source of their food, particularly through CSA farms.
History:
MACSAC is a 501 c(4) organization founded in 1992 to support and promote CSA farms. MACSAC works to connect people to their food through outreach and education events aimed at supporting local CSA farms and sharing the benefits with of a local, healthy and sustainable food system. CSA is a unique social and economic arrangement between local households and farmers who work together to share the responsibility of producing and delivering fresh food. Households support the farm by paying an annual fee in the winter or spring that entitles them to a "share" of the season's harvest. Once harvesting begins, members pick-up a weekly box of fresh foods which may include produce, fruits, cheeses, eggs, meats, poultry, flowers, herbs or preserves.
