We provide household and personal hygiene essentials -- such things as laundry soap, shampoo, deodorant, etc. -- to people and families at or below the poverty level.
Description:
The Personal Essentials Pantry is a service/mission of Zion Church ELCA on Madison's near-east side. We are open two days a week: Sundays from 11:30-2:00 and Thursdays 11:30-6:30. Households may visit the Pantry once a month for a total of six visits per year. Eligibility is based on income; we presume that people are at or below the poverty level. Service is limited to one visit per household per month.
History:
The Pantry was established on June 1, 2006, as the result of discussion about Zion's role in the community. Since that time, almost 600 households have been served; we anticipate serving 800 or so by the end of 2008. Zion offers the Pantry services because of the need for these services, and as a way of proclaiming our faith: "God loves you, and so do we!". Although Zion is a congregation of the ELCA, the Pantry is open to all people, regardless of race, religion, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, or family status.
