English In School is a unique program that teaches English to the parents of some of our ESL students. Some of our parents are at a disadvantage in our community by not knowing English. This program provides free lessons, for those parents who need this tool of language in order to support their family, to enhance involvement at school and the community as well as at their place of employment.
Description:
English In School (EIS) provides free child care for parents while they are learning English. While the parents are in "class" the volunteers will read with the children and engage them in literacy rich activities. Schenk Elementary will provide this opportunity, through the guidance of the ESL-Bilingual Administration and Migrant Education Program. A Schenk Elementary ESL teacher is the on-site coordinator for the program. This teacher is receiving training and support through the ESL Administration, downtown.
History:
Madison public schools and the department of Migrant Education Program have had much success with English In School (EIS). It's been a positive experience for both the volunteers and parents. Only the parents of students attending Schenk school will be able to participate. The program is set-up to support parents and their students by school attendance area. This program has been running for several years, with great success. This program provides another way for the school to reach out to it's students' parents and to develop a positive relationship.
