Our Mission: Edgewood College, rooted in the Dominican tradition, engages students within a community of learners committed to building a just and compassionate world. The College educates students for meaningful personal and professional lives of ethical leadership, service, and a lifelong search for truth.
Description:
We provide monthly service opportunities with LukeHouse, St. Vincent Depaul Food Pantry and many other organizations in the Madison area. We particpate in the 10,000 hours Show and we have several groups of students on campus that promote service and reflection.
History:
Edgewood College is a community of people dedicated to a dynamic educational heritage. In their historic tradition of vital and free inquiry into human and revealed truth, the Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters founded Edgewood College in 1927. Much earlier, Governor Cadwallader C. Washburn had given his 55-acre wooded estate on the shore of Lake Wingra in Madison to the Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters in 1881. On the site, they established an Academy which later grew into Edgewood Campus School and Edgewood High School. In 1927, Edgewood College was founded as a junior college for women. In 1940, the college grew into a senior four-year college, and the first bachelor’s degrees were awarded in 1942. During the 1950s and 1960s, the student body grew rapidly and many of the present buildings were erected. As the College grew it became co-educational in 1970. Now, with an enrollment of 2200 students, Edgewood College offers accredited programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels in a variety of academic fields.
