SOAR's mission is to provide long and short-term case management and related support services to assist consumers in developing their capabilities, talents and aspirations in a culturally competent, trauma informed and recovery oriented manner. SOAR seeks to improve the skills and abilities of consumers in relating to their communities by assisting people toward independence and self-reliance. SOAR helps consumers identify their personal recovery goals and assists them in their individual process of self-education and self-empowerment. Recovery is facilitated through a strength-based approach and support in procuring resources, providing guidance, modeling personal growth and encouraging self-development. We promote assumption of personal responsibility thereby instilling the ability to sustain ongoing growth and recovery.
History:
SOAR was founded in 1997 with an initial contract to serve eight consumers that had long histories of institutionalization in both Mendota and Prison. The goal was to assist them in becoming stable and secure for the first time outside of institutions. What began as one room, several cell phones, a founder, an accountant and one caseworker, is now a thriving program and an essential element of our county mental health system. Our goal is to fill in the gaps of the system, assisting people in short and long-term ways so they do not go into a crisis prior to receiving services. We provide innovative assistance to Dane County's system of care. Our primary purpose is to facilitate and create whatever innovations we can to keep a waiting list for mental health services at an absolute minimum.
