Our mission is to educate, support, serve and advocate for children with cancer, their families, survivors of childhood cancer and the professionals who care for them. We serve kids, teens and families living in a 30 county area in Wisconsin and in 5 northern Illinois counties.

Description:
Capital Candlelighters is a non-profit organization serving families whose children have been diagnosed with cancer, primarily those treated at the American Family Children's Hospital in Madison. We provide educational materials and interpersonal support to families of newly diagnosed children, a monthly family support group, quarterly social events, an inpatient library of information on childhood cancer for kids and adults and the popular Hero Bead program. Our largest service is providing emergency financial assistance for families of children undergoing cancer treatment and/or stem cell/bone marrow transplant to help them cover rent, car repairs, utility bills, groceries, transportation expenses, pharmacy co-pays, etc.

History:
Capital Candlelighters started as a family childhood cancer support group in Madison in the early 1970s. It has grown in the last decade to provide a wider array of direct services to kids and teens with cancer and their families. The governing board is made up predominantly of parents of children who were treated for cancer in the past and of community and business leaders who recognize the need to support local families with emotional, educational, social and financial support during the most frightening time in the their lives.
