Nuestro Mundo, Inc (NMI) is a non profit run by a volunteer Board of Directors. The primary function of NMI is to hold the charter for a dual language immersion school, Nuestro Mundo Community School (NMCS). NMCS is a Spanish/ English language immersion school that focuses on social justice and multiculturalism in its curriculum.
Description:
Housed within Frank Allis Elementary, Nuestro Mundo Community School creates a successful and unique learning environment through the use of dual language education and democratic decision-making. The child-centered, community-based and multicultural curriculum promotes high academic achievement in English and Spanish and prepares students to become active, global citizens. Nuestro Mundo exists to support the work of NMCS. Additionally, NMI supports the development of additional summer and after school programming, still being developed.
History:
Dedicated and concerned parents and community members came together about 1998 to start to think about the issues related to poor performance of Spanish speaking children in our public schools. The idea for a dedicated elementary school program was born. Later a contract was negotiated with the Madison Metro School District Board of Education for a charter school. The first class began in 2004.
