The SOL Mentor Program is a Madison Metropolitan School District and Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring initiative set in place to address the needs of Latino children living in Madison. SOL works in conjunction with Bethel Lutheran Church, Dane County’s Joining Forces for Families, the UW Latino Men's Group, the Chadbourne Residential College and other non-profit agencies to seek volunteers who become mentors to children living in our community.
Description:
We are looking for adults who can provide access to community-wide learning opportunities such as special multicultural events and activities, community service and volunteer opportunities. SOL staff will arrange trainings for mentors and plan regular family/mentor gatherings and outings for all to come together as a group and share experiences. We ask that our mentors commit to be matched for a minimum of a year and highly encourage them to continue past that anniversary.
History:
The SOL Mentor Program started matching Latino children living in the Allis and Sennett school attendance areas with adult mentors in 2003. In June of 2005 the service area was expanded to include Latino children in the Leopold and Cherokee attendance area. Along with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dane County we have been offering support services to our matches for over four years.
