Primates Incorporated is raising funds to construct an indoor/outdoor primate sanctuary in southern Wisconsin. Our mission is to provide lifetime enriched care and improve the quality of life for nonhuman primates who come from the entertainment industry, research facilities, zoos, refuges, and private ownerships.

Description:
Our organization meets monthly in Madison, WI where we generate ideas on how best to fulfill our mission, accomplish our fundraising goals, and discuss and review articles aimed at improving the welfare of captive primates.

Currently, the retirement of monkeys from the research industry is a rare occurrence, even though approximately 50,000 Old and New World monkeys are being used in research in the United States today. Primates Incorporated believes that by increasing awareness about primate retirement and by creating a naturalistic sanctuary, we can maximize the retirement of monkeys from research.

History:
Primates Incorporated became an official nonprofit organization in July, 2004. The organization was founded by the President, Amy Kerwin, while she was working in a primate research facility. Kerwin recognized the need for primate retirement and decided to create a nonprofit dedicated to creating a sanctuary in a northern location so that the transportation stress on a monkey would be reduced when arriving from a northern research facility, zoo, or private ownership.

Primates Incorporated is an all-volunteer organization. Members help Primates Incorporated by providing their input on how to create an enriching sanctuary, by editing grant proposals, and by summarizing scientific articles relating to improving the welfare of captive primates.
