The Primary Mission of Jewish Social Services is to enhance the quality of life for children, families, and senior adults through the provision of social services.
Description:
Jewish Social Services is a not-for-profit human services agency known for compassionate, effective solutions for individuals, couples and families. Our staff members are experienced, resourceful professionals. In addition, a dedicated corps of volunteers plays a vital role in linking JSS to the community. While the agency remains rooted in Jewish traditions, our services are non-sectarian, reaching people of all ages, backgrounds and lifestyles. We do not charge fees for our services. We provide services for individuals and families under stress, elders and family support, senior social and recreational group programs, assistance for people facing life's challenges, protective services and financial management and for refugees and immigrants. We work with refugees from all around the world and are now recognized by the United States Board of Imigration Appeals to represent clients in immigration matters. We assist low-income emigres who cannot afford the higher fees of immigration attorneys. JSS is the only agency in Dane County to hav earned this BIA recogntion. In addition, our Director of Immigrant & Refugee Services is accredited by the BIA to practice before the Department of Homeland Security, and is the only individual in Dane County to have earned the recognition to represent clients to the United States Customs and Immigration Services.
History:
Jewish Social Services traces it roots back to the "Jewish Central Committee of Madison," established in the 1930's, and to the "Madison Jewish Welfare Fund," created in 1940 to help resettle refugees in Madison who were fleeing the HOlocaust. The latter was the forerunner of the current Madison Jewish Community Council (MJCC). In the early 1970's the MJCC Senior Adult Committee designed a project which hired two part-time geriatric social workres to provide lmited casework services and group activities for seniors in the Madison Jewish community. In 1978 the geriatric social service staff became part of Jewish Social Services of Madison, Inc. (JSS), which was invorporated as a wholly autonomous agency. That same year, JSS became a participating agency in the United Way of Dane County, and began serving the entire community. JSS is now also a member of the Association of Jewish Family and Children's Agencies, the West Madison Senior Coalition and the State of Wisconsin Refugee Advisory Committee. In 1978 we helped 152 individuals; that's grown to as many as 1,000 annually. We pride ourselves on guaranteeing access to all, regardless of financial means. Beginning in the late 1970's and increasing dramatically in the late 1980's-early 1990's, JSS resettled hundreds of primarily Jewish refugees from the Former Soviet Union. Hundreds of volunteers served as host families, taught English as a Second Language, donated household furnishings, made employment connections and helped these refugees acclimate to life in the US. Today these former refugees are productive, contributing members of our community.
