Standing with the poor and hurting, planting seeds of social change...
Description:
The Madison-area Urban Ministry is a social justice organization that has spurred social change in and about Dane County for three decades. Currently MUM prioritizes its work around prisoners returning to the community and around homelessness. MUM has the following guiding values:
- Helping frame issues with compassion, mercy and justice
- Promoting interfaith cooperation and collaboration
- Asking the question: "Are all people's voices being heard?"
- Engaging youth on issues of concern
- Promoting respectful and thoughtful dialogue
- Advocating with low-income people
- Emphasizing change in systems
History:
Founded in 1973, MUM is an interfaith ministry organization which acts as a catalyst to help individuals, faith groups, and community groups to "stand with the poor and hurting" and "plant seeds of social change." MUM is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that links over 100 faith communities and a myriad of individuals. MUM is often the major voice with those in poverty, the disenfranchised, and the marginalized. During its history, fourteen of the most innovative and community-building nonprofits in the area were conceived and hatched by MUM. These include Family Enhancement, Transitional Housing Inc., Madison Community Health Center, and others. MUM has convened community clusters to stand with residents of Allied Drive, the Northside, and Greater Isthmus neighborhoods. MUM's dialogue forums engage people in deep conversation on controversial issues such as prisoner rehabilitation, offender-victim conferencing, and juvenile justice. MUM's Call to Renewal Roundtable on Racism addresses racism and hatred, most recently on reparations and Latino working conditions. MUM is a leader in the local HOMES coalition against homelessness and for low cost housing access. MUM's Justice Issues Task Force spurred MUM to work in the area of prison reform and restorative justice. MUM has embarked on a project to develop Returning Prisoner Simulations, in which people come together to "walk in the shoes of a newly released prisoner." MUM is developing a network of Circles of Support to encircle newly released prisoners.
