Wisconsin Wetlands Association, a non-profit organization, is dedicated to protecting, restoring, and enjoying wetlands and their associated habitats through science-based education, advocacy, and action.

Description:
WWA provides education and information to landowners, land managers, interested citizens, and the general public regarding the management, protection, and ecology of wetlands. WWA also monitors and mobilizes public participation in wetland-related policy development and implementation.

History:
Concerns for the impacts of a proposed Beltline highway on the south side of Madison brought a handful of wetland enthusiasts together in 1969-1970. This loosely formed group called itself the Dane County Wetlands Association. Although the Beltline was eventually constructed, citizens and agencies of the region became much more familiar with wetlands and their values as a result of this effort. So began the organization's long and colorful history.

In 1977, Southern Wisconsin Wetlands Association changed its name to Wisconsin Wetlands Association (WWA) and was incorporated as a non-profit organization [501(c)(3)] in 1982. WWA remained a totally volunteer organization until 1993, when Tom Boswell was hired as the organization's first paid part-time coordinator.

Over the years, WWA has been involved in countless local and regional conservation issues, legislation pertaining to wetlands, and ongoing efforts to educate Wisconsin's diverse population about the values of wetlands. They have produced valuable print resources for landowners and others concerned with protecting wetlands, including the Citizen's Wetland Protection Handbook in 1997 and, in collaboration with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and other agencies, a wetland restoration handbook for landowners in 2000. WWA has hosted annual conferences since 1995 to facilitate the exchange of information on current wetland science among professionals in government, academia, and the private sector. The theme of the 2008 conference is Wetlands in the 21st Century: Altered Landscapes and Changing Climates.
