St. Martin House, an agency of the Catholic Diocese of Madison, will strive to foster social justice and promote human dignity by reaching out to our neighbors through spiritual enrichment, charitable and educational programs, and community advocacy.

Description:
St. Martin House is an outreach center of the Diocese of Madison that serves the southside of Madison through programs to assist those in need. Housed in the Catholic Multicultural Center, St. Martin House provides a free meal program, nurse services, and access to an educational computer lab. We also work with the surrounding neighborhood and other community agencies to address social justice issues that affect our clients.

History:
St. Martin House was founded in 1946 by a Catholic priest and a group of lay women to help the church reach out to the African-American community. In 1952 St. Martin House moved into a new building on Beld St. built by volunteer labor. It quickly became a gathering place for children, adults and families to participate in education, recreation and social activities. Known as the city's first inter-racial center, the volunteers of St. Martin House had a reputation of doing anything possible to help people in need.

It quickly developed into a spiritual community center, that was known for fostering inter-racial harmony. As the Hispanic population in the diocese began to grow, St. Martin House volunteers reached out to migrant workers and Latino families in the Madison area.

In 1982, as the economic recession was beginning, St. Martin House began its free community meal program. The meal continues to be served every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 4:00 pm, and also the last Tuesday and Thursday of each month.
