The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy and service.
History:
The American Cancer Society was founded in 1913. The American Cancer Society Research Program began in 1946. By the year 2000, the ACS will have funded more than $2 billion in cancer research - and funded 31 scientists who went on to earn the Nobel prize. Through the years the American Cancer Society has had many successes such as beginning the effort to gain acceptance of the Pap test in 1960, had findings in research regarding cigarette smoking as being irrefutably linked to cancer concurred with by the Surgeon General along with many other successes.
