To provide quality, affordable housing and human services to low and moderate income residents of Madison. In addition, the Foundation develops and supports innovative programs, which blend education and the arts to increase cultural awareness and ethnic pride for residents and the larger community.
Description:
Bayview Foundation, Inc. is a private, non-profit, tax-exempt organization that serves 102 low and moderate income families in the Triangle Neighborhood. Many services are provided through the Bayview International Center for Education and the Arts. The center offers Head Start, ESL, after-school programs (recreational activities such as arts and crafts, cooking, computers and academic activities like reading and tutoring). Bayview programs do not only benefit residents, but serve individuals and families outside the neighborhood from the greater Madison area.
History:
At the turn of the century, Sicilians and Italians immigrants moved to Madison in search for a better life. They moved to a swampy marsh off Monona Bay, an area which has resisted development because no one wanted to live there. As blacks from the rural South and immigrants from other countries arrived, the former swamp became home to as many as 14 different ethnic groups. This neighborhood became the Greenbush. By the end of the 50s, the decision to dismantle the Greenbush had already been made. In the name of urban renewal, families were moved, houses razed, and a community was split apart. By the early 70s, the Greenbush has been rebuilt into apartments for the retirees, the disabled and those of low income. Bayview Townhouses was 1 of the 2 complexes built for families. By the early 80s, Bayview was on a path that married sound fiscal management with an innovative approach to human services.
