Ninth and tenth graders at Memorial are matched with caring adults who encourage them in their educational and personal goals in order to prevent drop-outs. Capable youth sometimes give up because they need support and motivation to succeed.

Description:
Mentors make at least a one year commitment to invest time in a youth who may think nobody cares. Recognizing their unique gifts and talents and helping them to think about the future and steps needed to realize their dreams is their role. They may or may not tutor. They provide windows into a wider world by spending time outside school hours listening, affirming and doing activities together to build confidence and social skills to function in the adult world.

History:
Memorial Mentor Program is in its sixth year and is an outgrowth of a district-wide effort to improve minority achievement in order to keep struggling students in school. Many students credit their mentors with being good listeners who gave positive feedback when they thought they could not graduate and gradually became convinced that they could find the way to a productive career. They keep believing in them until they can believe in themselves.
