The mission of Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin, Inc. is to ensure the right of all individuals to manage their sexual and reproductive health through direct service, education and advocacy.
Description: For over 71 years, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin has been providing accessible health care services, sexuality education, and advocacy for legislation that protects reproductive rights throughout the state. Our doors are open to everyone--regardless of race, religion, sexual identity or practices, age, or income.
With the generous support of private donations and public grants, PPWI looks to a future where women have access to the reproductive health care they need, teenagers receive medically accurate and non-biased sexuality education, and legislators make responsible and compassionate decisions about women and their bodies.
Health care services. We believe that every person--man, woman, or teen--has a right to the quality health care services they need to stay strong and well. At 31 clinics statewide, we provide a variety of confidential services including:
Annual health exams
All methods of birth control
Cancer screening
Pregnancy testing and counseling
Emergency contraceptive pills
Sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment
Abortion services (Milwaukee Jackson Street & Appleton North only)
All of our services are based on a sliding-fee scale, and we accept Medicaid (T19), BadgerCare, and can bill most insurance plans. Over half of our clients live at or below the poverty line. Regardless of their ability to pay, we work hard to keep our patients healthy. Research shows that only by providing accessible health care services will the health of women improve and the number of unintended pregnancies, teen pregnancies and infant deaths decline.
Education. We believe that providing people with accurate, age-appropriate, unbiased sexuality education is the key to responsible decision-making. Our education programs include:
Community Outreach Programming: Available in all locations, these one- to two-hour programs cover puberty, adult/child communication skills, contraception, and prevention of sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS.
Comprehensive Education Programming: These 6 to 14-hour programs--available to parents, elementary school children, preteens, teenagers and adults--cover all topics related to improved decision-making and communication regarding sexuality issues and sexual health.
Professional Training and Program Kits: Created for professionals, these training and program kits provide all the information and materials needed to provide sexuality education sessions.
Ritz Family Resource Center: Our library has an extensive collection of audiovisuals, books and curriculum on sexuality issues that are available for loan to the general public.
Advocacy. We believe that advocacy at the grassroots level is key to winning the battle to protect reproductive rights and freedom. PPWI is deeply committed to education, access to family planning services and prevention of unintended pregnancies. To provide these services, we must ensure that our legislators at the state and local levels make the best decisions for women and their families. PPWI mobilizes volunteers--educating them about the issues, and assisting them in making their voices heard in public policy arenas.
History: From its genesis in 1935, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin has been a leader in providing reproductive health care, birth control, education, and the advocacy to help make all of this possible.
While PPWI has delivered these services under different names and at various locations, our mission has remained essentially consistent. In fact, we have re-committed to re-establishing our important connections with our original supports, including religious communities and other private and government health care providers, as well as revitalizing our educational outreach programs statewide.
Today's Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin--physically present in 31 health centers across Wisconsin, politically instrumental in protecting access, and educationally re-emerging--is built on the bedrock of the time and talents of thousands of visionary volunteers and professional staff over the last 64 years.
