The Madison Early Music Festival (MEMF) provides an opportunity for musicians, scholars, teachers, and early music enthusiasts to gather and exchange information and ideas about Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque music, and to bring acclaimed early music artists to the Midwest to perform in Madison, Wisconsin.
Description:
Do you know what "Early Music" is? Are you aware that some of the best "Early Musicians" in the country are in residence for a week each July at the Madison Early Music Festival? The Madison Early Music Festival offers an exciting opportunity to learn about and experience first-hand the music and performance practices associated with the music of the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque eras. There are opportunities for everyone, from those who simply enjoy listening to concerts and lectures, to early music scholars, and performance opportunities for amateurs to professionals. All listeners, singers, players and dancers are welcome! The Madison Early Music Festival is co-sponsored by the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Music and Division of Continuing Studies. An Advisory Board of community members provides guidance and support for the Festival.
History:
The first Madison Early Music Festival took place July 16-29, 2000 on the University of WI campus. The festival consisted of workshop classes for players and singers of early music taught by distinguished faculty from the UW-School of Music and guest artists, as well as a concert and lecture series open to the general public. The focus was music of 17th century Italy and Germany, featuring the works of Claudio Monteverdi and Heinrich Schutz. Subsequent festivals have focused on music of the English Renaissance (2001), French Medieval and Renaissance Music (2002), Bach and His World (2003), "The Glories of 17th Century Venice" (2004), "The Fairest Isle: Music of England and Scotland" (2005), and "Music from the Iberian Peninsula" (2006). The 2007 Festival featured music from "The Age of the Netherlanders." Our theme for 2008 is "Handel's Journey from Germany to England via Italy." The festival will be held from July 12 to July 19.
