Cornucopia is an arts and wellness recovery center run by and for adults who have a wide variety of mental illnesses. We promote mental wellness by offering members opportunities to work on their individual recovery plans through peer support and self-help workshops.
Description:
Cornucopia, Inc. provides art workshops and wellness programs at no additional charge for only $24 a year. We are over 75% run by adults who have mental health issues, including our paid staff and board of directors. Our office hours are Mon. through Fri. from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. To address issues of isolation and loneliness which rate high among consumers of mental health services, we try to offer classes, workshops, and special events afternoons and evenings between 1:00 - 9:00 pm, Mon. through Thurs., and between 1:00 - 5:00 pm on Fri., Sat., and/or Sun. Membership is available to anyone who has mental health issues, their friends and family. Members do not need to disclose their diagnosis to join. We welcome adults (18 and older) who have a wide range of mental illnesses including but not limited to borderline personality, schizoaffective, bipolar, post traumatic stress disorder, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsion, and/or who have a dually diagnosed substance addiction. Our main room holds computers with high speed internet access plus a library and art supplies for member use. Classes are held in the main room and in our gallery space next door, where our members can display their work to the general public. A dollar lunch is available in the Porchlight dining room most weekdays at noon. More information is available on our website plus in our monthly newsletters, as well as by phone or email.
History:
Cornucopia was incorporated in 1997 as a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation. We started as a safe space for people to avoid isolation and share the company of others while creating in art media. Our membership has grown from 10 to over 100 in the past ten years. We have been in our current space at 306 N. Brooks St. since 1999, where we have grown into an artist collective welcoming newcomers and organizing public exhibits.
