National Lung Cancer Partnership is dedicated to decreasing deaths due to lung cancer, and helping patients live longer and better, through research, awareness and advocacy.

Description:
Our immediate goals are to:
(1) Raise awareness of the deadly impact of lung cancer, particularly upon women
(2) Increase funding for lung cancer research
(3) Support and promote research into sex differences in lung cancer
(4) Encourage professionals, particularly women, to enter into and be successful in lung cancer research, treatment and care
(5) Educate and empower patients to actively participate in their treatment and care

Some of our current programs include:

  • A Petition Drive to increase federal funding for lung cancer research in the US. We have already garnered the support of several other prominent organizations, with which we will partner to gather signatures, and hold briefings, hearings, and lobby days on Capitol Hill to raise awareness of the deadly impact of lung cancer and the under-funding of lung cancer research relative to other diseases in the US.
  • Lung Cancer Research Grants to provide seed money for promising novel research for a faculty member at any level to promote the understanding of sex differences in the molecular, cellular, and environmental underpinnings of lung cancer.
  • Lung Cancer Career Development Awards to develop the careers of junior clinical and basic investigators in lung cancer etiology, prevention, and treatment, and/or for clinicians to begin a lung cancer program at their institution.
  • Meetings and Conferences to increase the profile of lung cancer and its toll on women's lives, increase research into sex differences in lung cancer, and forward the careers of health-care professionals in lung cancer research.
  • Career Development Seminars to impart skills and techniques necessary for job placement, advancement, and satisfaction. These seminars will help ensure that junior and senior lung cancer researchers are retained.
  • Print Newsletters which describe updates in lung cancer research, treatment and advocacy, to distribute to lung cancer patients, family members, friends and members of the health professions community.
  • A Patient Education Handbook to describe treatment options, side effects, and participation in clinical research.
  • A Patient Education Video to describe the clinical trials process to patients and encourage them to consider a clinical trial as part of their treatment options.
  • Public Service Announcements to educate women about their risks of lung cancer.

  • History:
National Lung Cancer Partnership was founded as Women Against Lung Cancer by Dr. Joan Schiller, an oncologist previously at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, now at the University of Texas-Southwestern. Dr. Schiller became frustrated by the lack of progress on a number of fronts, including: attention to lung cancer as a women's health issue; funding for lung cancer research; finding qualified researchers to fill fellowship and other training spots; understanding about how men and women develop lung cancer and respond to treatments. With these disparities in mind, she gathered together her colleagues, patients, and family members of patients to form Women Against Lung Cancer. The organization was officially incorporated in March, 2003, and changed its name to National Lung Cancer Partnership in June, 2006.
