Legal representation is prohibitively expensive for many people in need of legal services. Free and low-cost legal resources are scarce and hard to obtain. There is a critical need in the Wisconsin community to increase access to the legal system for low-income and under-represented individuals. It is our mission to serve this population through direct legal services, community awareness educational programming and policy development advisory work. It is our goal to provide legal services at a rate drastically below the market cost of representation. We believe that through community collaboration we can advocate for the legal needs of low-income and under-represented people in the courtroom and community.
Description:
Community Justice Inc. is a non-profit law firm dedicated to serving low-income and underrepresented individuals. We provide broad range legal services from advice and negotiation to full litigation on a variety of civil issues. These areas include landlord/tenant, disability, employment, family, environmental, public benefits, discrimination, consumer/credit and child welfare law. We also take criminal defense appointments from the State Public Defender. Additionally, we work with other organizations to provide community education on the issues surrounding poverty and indigency.
History:
Community Justice Inc. was founded in 2004 by four attorneys with public interest and social justice backgrounds. Through our work we have seen low-income and underrepresented people denied meaningful access to the justice system due to their socioeconomic circumstances. This lack of access precludes these individuals from exercising their basic legal rights and receiving the benefit of a system purported to serve all equally. We believe that justice should be unfettered by socioeconomic circumstances. Therefore, we are dedicated to providing access to legal services through low-cost legal representation and increasing community awareness through educational outreach.
