The Mission of the CASA of Dane County Program is to act in the best interest of children in need of protection and services (CHIPS)by providing trained volunteers to act as advocates for these children and to assist guardian ad litem attorneys and social workers in presenting information to the court. CASA volunteers remain on a case with the children until the court order expires, usually for the period of one year.
Description:
CASA volunteers are specially trained "everyday" people who agree to represent the best interests of abused or neglected children for one year. CASA volunteers are assigned by the juvenile court to one child/family and visit them in their homes once a week. Their main task is to report whether or not the children are safe and if the current court orders are being followed. Volunteers meet everyone in the child's life and send monthly written reports to the court.
CASA volunteers must be 21 years of age and agree to undergo a thorough background check and participate in 30 hours of training, a morning of courtroom observation and then are sworn in by the Chief Juvenile Judge. Volunteers must provide personal as well as professional references. CASA volunteers must commit to at least one year of service. We train new volunteers only once or twice a year.
