Purpose: To help individuals gain independence from any addictive behavior. Mission: Offer no-fee, self-empowering, science-based, mutual-support meetings.
HENCE, we are seeking Volunteers to facilitate these meetings.
SMART Recovery meetings are an excellent alternative or supplement to 12-Step / Anonymous groups like AA.
Description:
SMART Recovery volunteers facilitate meetings - get them started, keep them on topic, see that everyone gets a chance to talk and share, keeps things running smoothly, and without confrontation or criticism, and informs attendees of our science-based, secular, program. SMART Recovery is a not-for-profit educational organization run almost entirely by volunteers. Volunteers find the experience to be VERY REWARDING!
You may be recovered or you may be a person who has never had an alcohol or other drug problem. To be a volunteer facilitator all you need is the desire to help and basic agreement with our mission and principles as described here and at http://www.smartrecovery.org
Principles:
We respect individual choice
We encourage taking personal responsibility
We share proven principles of change
We believe in "unconditional self-acceptance"
We discourage the use of labels
Spirituality is optional; not required
We empower people to help themselves and others
Our 4 Point Program:
- enhance and maintain motivation to abstain;
- cope with cravings and urges;
- better manage beliefs, feelings and behaviors to solve life's problems;
- find a balance of short and long term satisfactions and so achieve a balanced lifestyle.
Once one has gained independence from harmful addictive behaviors they are invited to stay and help, but may graduate and move on with their lives if they prefer.
You may also volunteer to help SMART Recovery ways other than facilitating meetings, like arranging talks, setting up schedules, contacting the media. Just ask.
History:

In 2004 the 2nd edition of The SMART Recovery Handbook - available at the Madison Public Library or for sale at our meetings for $10)was published. It is now available in several languages around the world. Our web page, on-line meetings, and an on-line community of support continue to evolve. There are now meetings in several other countries and a program for prison inmates (Inside/Out)is available. We have been endorsed by: NIDA, ASAM and AAFP.
