Sarvodaya USA seeks a world of inclusive, healthy and sustainable communities where individuals and organizations consciously act together to overcome political, cultural, geographical, socioeconomic and religious divisions to support quality of life for all.

Description:
The The mission of Sarvodaya USA is to learn from and support the work of the Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement of Sri Lanka and worldwide, and to facilitate the application of the Movement's holistic community development vision and philosophy in the United States. To do so, we:
Educate ourselves and others to more just and spiritual ways of being in the world;

Build participatory social and economic institutions based on joy, compassion, cooperation, nonviolence and respect for nature;

Facilitate the development of the human potential for the spiritual, mental and physical well-being of all;
Marshall resources in support of the Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement; and

Replicate this model of individual and community empowerment both nationally and internationally.

History:
Sarvodaya USA was established in 1988. Until early 2005, Sarvodaya USA was a small network of volunteers that supported the Sarvodaya Shramadana movement in Sri Lanka. Since the tsunami in 2004, a major part of our focus both in the US and Sri Lanka has been on rebuilding the communities affected by the disaster. However, as many of the tsunami related rebuilding is coming to an end and the escalation of violence in Sri Lanka has become a major challenge, we are currently refocusing our energies in the peace-related work through our National Awakening program. Besides working in Sri Lanka, Sarvodaya USA supports some Sarvodaya inspired local initiatives both in the US and other countries, especially in Nepal.

While Sarvodaya USA is a small organization, the Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement in Sri Lanka is the largest grassroots development organization in the country, working in 15,000 villages. Sarvodaya works with the local communities to faciliate holistic development and its ideologies are taken from Gandhian and Buddhist philosophies. Sarvodaya believes in non-violent and peaceful transformation of societies.
