Would you like to make a profound difference in the life of a child? Orchard Ridge Elementary School has just the opportunity for you! Orchard Ridge Elementary (ORE) has many students, grades K through 5, who are in need of a mentor during the school day. Volunteer mentors are matched with an individual child and meet at ORE approximately 45 minutes per week. Play games, read a book, or just simply talk- the meaningful relationship you develop with your mentee is guaranteed to brighten his or her day. Who can be a mentor? Any caring, mature individual who is willing to invest about 1 hour per week can be a mentor. Mentors make a one-year commitment for an effective contribution to a young person's life. What do mentors do? Mentors give one-on-one attention to a struggling student who may be feeling like nobody cares. The adult friend can reassure the child that he/she has talents to develop, that education is key to the career of their choice, and that setting goals will help. Who are high-need students? Why do these students need extra support? Children identified by their schools as struggling with social, learning, and/or family stressors. These needs directly interfere with self-esteem and school engagement. Mentoring provides these children with the individual attention to boost self-esteem and to encourage resilience! What is a mentor's main contribution? Mentors provide a window into a wider world. He/she may show the student how to play games or sports, share a hobby or special interest, use the public library, or attend a special event or class. The best gift to give is a listening ear and a positive outlook on life. We all need to know that there is someone who really cares what we do and believes that we can become all that we hope to be. Certainly, one-on-one contact with a child is a life changing experience not only for the child, but the mentor too. Join ORE's Mentor Program and make an impact in a child's life!
