MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of Big Brothers/Big sisters is to make a positive difference in the lives of children and youth, primarily through a professionally-supported one-to-one relationship with a caring adult, and to assist them in achieving their highest potential as they grow to become responsible men and women by providing committed volunteers, leadership and standards of excellence.

Description:
BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS VISION

As the largest national network of mentoring organizations serving children, families and communities, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America has a vision to develop the resources, environment and mechanisms to provide caring adults in the life of every child in need.

Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America is the acknowledged leader in building relationships which unite children with committed volunteers, primarily on a one-to-one basis, transforming their lives and enriching families, communities and society. Our work is as elementary as putting a friend in a child's life and as essential as putting hope in a child's future.

To achieve our vision, we will continue to build on our century-long history of commitment to excellence and of valuing all individuals, respecting their efforts,
abilities and differences.

MENTORING MAGIC

Children in our program who are matched with a volunteer Big Brother or Big Sister are:
46% less likely than their peer to start using illegal drugs
27% less likely than their peers to start drinking alcohol
52% less likely than their peers to skip school
More trusting if their parents or guardians Less likely to lie to their parents or guardians
Felt more supported and less criticized by their peers and friends

Actual Quotes from "Littles"

"Before I got my Big Brother, I was lonely. I would just hang around.
He teaches me sports and is fun to be with."

"When I overheard my Big Brother talking to some people about me, it was the nicest
things I've ever heard anyone say about me. I knew then that I did matter."

"My Big Sister has been there for me. She always has time to listen and has helped
me through the toughest times of my life. I hope some day I can help her."

What better gift to give a child than the tools they need
to insure their future!!
We "match" a screened adult volunteer with a child - usually from a single parent family. Our case managers are in contact with the adult volunteers for support. We run several events during the year. We provide lists of activities that the volunteer can do with their "Little".

History:
We have been in existence for over 35 years in Southwestern Connecticut. We have matched thousands of children with caring, screened adult volunteers thru the years.
