Big Brothers/Big Sisters mentoring programs match children primarily from single parent families or who have special needs with screened, trained, supervised adult volunteers. This adult acts as a role model, mentor and friend to the child and offers help and support.
Description:
Children between the ages of 7 and 14 are referred to this agency by their parents or guardians, their teachers or human services professionals. They are interviewed and then matched with the volunteer Big whose interests and assets best mirror theirs. Throughout the life of the relationship they are supported by a professional case manager. The results of the pairings speak for themselves. Children matched with mentors consistently perform better in school, improve their relationships with family and peers and are less likely than their peers to become involved with alcohol or illegal drugs.
History:
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwestern Connecticut is an affiliate of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, an organization established in 1904. This agency is the result of a 1993 merger between BBBS of Fairfield County and BBBS of South Central CT.
