Book Buddies
Last updated on March 26, 2008
Logo

"Book Buddies" is a volunteer program focused primarily in the lower grades. The "Book Buddy" listens to a child read for 10 to 20 minutes, giving help as needed. The teacher will provide a book, usually on the child's independent reading level (a level at which the child should know 95% of the words). Although the volunteer normally works with one child at a time, teachers occasionally ask if the volunteer would be willing to work with two or more children on the same reading level. During a one-hour period, a volunteer is likely to work individually with several different students. This may take place within the classroom or in any other convenient space - even in the hallway using two chairs. The atmosphere should be relaxed and enjoyable. The volunteer is encouraged to take time to get to know each student, their special interests, to talk about the book, etc.

A weekly one hour commitment is preferred, but not required. A half-hour session can be combined with reading to a class (Reading Enrichment).
