Literacy Volunteers of Southeastern Fairfield County (LVSFC) teaches native born American to read and write English. Many in Fairfield County can only sign their names, and that is the extent of their reading and writing capabilities. Our aim is to help people increase their job skills and gain opportunities to get a better paying position. It is simple to become a Basic Literacy Tutor.

After the fourth training session, the volunteer is matched with a learner to meet on a day and time that is convenient for both the tutor and learner. Tutors and learners work together for two hours per week. We currently have a waiting list of students eager to learn.THERE IS A $30.00 DEPOSIT FOR MATERIALS THAT WILL BE REFUNDED UPON THE COMPLETION OF TUTOR TRAINING.

PEOPLE INTERESTED SHOULD ATTEND A VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION SESSION TO LEARN WHAT IS REQUIRED OF A TUTOR. The next Orientations will be in the morning on the following dates: Wednesday, June 18, Westport Library, 9:30 AM - 11:00 AM; Thursday, Stratford Library, 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM; Wednesday, July 16, Trumbull Library, 9:30 AM - 11:00 AM; Thursday, July 17, Fairfield Main Library, 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM. BASIC LITERACY TRAINING COURSE: Basic Literacy Training will be on Thursday mornings, July 24, 31, Aug. 7, 14, Sept. 18 from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM, Fairfield Main Library.
