Comforting Blankets, is a non-profit group providing blankets to cancer patients while they are in the hospital at Eastern Maine Medical Center (this group is not affiliated with Eastern Maine Medical Center). The patients are then able to bring the blankets home with them.
Description:
Comforting Blankets is working to make a difference in the life of a cancer patient by giving them some comfort and something to hold onto during all that they endure during their hospital stay. As brave as they are, they still need someone there for them; this is where I come in. The doctors can put them into remission, but they sometimes have a long road getting there. With all the bumps in the road, I thought that they should have something to hold on to; something to give them some comfort. With the help of local citizens and local businesses, I provided this sense of comfort to many cancer patients by letting them know that someone is thinking of them. If you would like to help give a cancer patient some comfort by donating a new homemade or store bought blanket(s), or you would like more information about the group please feel free to contact Bobbie Dumond at Comforting Blankets.
History:
I came up with the idea after one of my co-workers' cancer came back and I gave her a blanket that I had made. She told me how much comfort it gave her knowing that she had someone thinking of her and that she wasn’t alone. At the end of March 2007, I started Comforting Blankets. This is a small group, but it has made a world of difference to the cancer patients that have received our blankets.
