The purpose of the York County Food Rescue is to help alleviate hunger by enhancing the recovery of donated food in and around York County. In addition, the program improves the coordination and communication between the 43 area food pantries and meal programs. The York County Food Rescue Program streamlines the donation process and ensures that agencies receive an appropriate and equitable amount of food safely and efficiently. In many cases, this food rescued accounts for 50% of the goods that food Pantries distribute in their respective communities.

Description:
Some of the area's largest retailers, manufacturers, food service provders and distributors trust York County Food Rescue as the leader in surplus food distribution. These companies such as Shaw's, Hannaford Brother's, Curran's and New Hampshire Food Bank, know that by putting their donation into the hands of the food rescue program, it will be used in the spirit in which it was given.

History:
Beginning in January 2008, York County Food Rescue, a program of Stone Soup Food Pantry, with assistance from York County Community Action, is reenergizing food rescue work in York County. The program operates out of the Jagger Mills Building in Sanford in space donated by York County Shelter Programs, Inc. An Advisory Committee made up of representatives from thse organizations, additional food pantries and meal programs, businesses, United Way of York County, U.S. Department of Agriculture, support this program.
