United Way of Eastern Maine
| Last updated on July 15, 2008 |
United Way's mission is to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities. Our vision is for Eastern Maine to be recognized as the best place to live.
Description:
To achieve our mission, United Way of Eastern Maine will energize and inspire people to make a difference; build coalitions around impact agendas; increase investments in these agendas; measure, communicate and learn from our results; and we will improve income, health and education within our targeted impact populations. Some of our programs include: 2-1-1 Maine, a free, confidential telephone number available 24/7. 2-1-1 is the gateway to health and social services, government assistance, and local community resources. Born Learning-School Readiness: a strategic, multi-year initiative that will measurably improve school readiness and positively affect children's ability to be successful in school. UWEM funds 76 agency programs in Hancock, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Waldo, and Washington Counties that work locally to Strengthen Children & Families, Support Seniors, and Meet Basic Needs and Improve Self-Sufficiency within our communities. VolunteerMaine, a statewide, online Volunteer Center, offered at no cost to agencies or volunteers using its services.
History:
United Way of Eastern Maine was founded in 1937 so that local, community volunteers could raise and distribute funds to agencies who help people in need. While the principle hasn't changed, United Way is now working to mobilize the whole community to create lasting solutions to our community's most pressing needs.

Overall Experience
An excellent internship experience!
 |
Interning at the United Way of Eastern Maine gave me excellent experience and knowledge that was invaluable to help me get my first job out of college. I learned so much about non-profit administration, public speaking skills, fundraising and communications. A good internship has as much to do with your co-workers as it does the work, and the people at United Way made my internship the wonderful experience that it was! posted on August 20, 2002 |
