 United Way of Eastern Maine is actively recruiting for an AmeriCorps*VISTA to fulfill a one-year, stipended service term in the Communities for Children and Youth program.
The UWEM Early Childhood AmeriCorps VISTA will work with the Director of Community Impact to develop and implement the School Readiness initiative of the Strengthening Children and Families Impact Council.
The VISTA will be part of a community-wide effort, in a community that has been selected by UWEM through a competitive process, to work on measurable, sustainable change in community conditions that will impact the number of children entering kindergarten ready to succeed in school.
UWEM views School Readiness as a cumulative end-result of “Ready Children” + “Ready Communities” + “Ready Families” + “Ready Schools." Indicators of change may focus on health activities, parenting activities, kindergarten transition activities or something else as determined by the community. It will require initial data collection to determine a starting and end point. The community will decide with input from a broad base of community stakeholders which indicators are important and which strategies they will use to implement change. This is a long-range project that may take at least five years to see data that indicates successful impact.
This is a dynamic VISTA position that will need a volunteer who is energetic and resourceful, as well as a good listener; who is capable of working with a diverse group of people -- some of whom may not be familiar with group dynamics or the process of community change. It will require vision and patience. This position will research grants that may be available to community coalitions for planning, as well as assist the community in writing the grant proposal.
This position will bring groups of people together for focus groups and discussions about priority issues in their community and make recommendations about next steps following the recommended guidelines from United Way pertaining to effective community change.
AmeriCorps*VISTA Members are required to attend a pre-service orientation through the Corporation for National and Community Service and will also undergo an on-site orientation. The member will attend numerous training and professional development opportunities and events during his/her year of service. Interning at the United Way of Eastern Maine gave me excellent experience and knowledge that was invaluable to help me get my first job out of college. I learned so much about non-profit administration, public speaking skills, fundraising and communications. A good internship has as much to do with your co-workers as it does the work, and the people at United Way made my internship the wonderful experience that it was!
