AmeriCorps Massachusetts Legal Assistance
Last updated on May 5, 2008

The Massachusetts Legal Assistance for Self Sufficiency Program (MLASSP) is a statewide provider of legal services, committed to the delivery of social justice. MLASSP places 28 pre-professional AmeriCorps members in various legal aid offices and legal non-profit organizations in the Commonwealth. Most members have a desire to attend law school and practice public service law, or at the minimum experience the legal field prior to determining a career path. The position is full time, approximately 40 hours per week. Current Corps members have screened over 2,500 potential clients for legal services in the first half of their service year. These screenings parlay into brief services or counsel, or extended service and case representation which in many instances, are handled by the members. Each member is provided basic lawyering skills training and additional education pertinent to his/her specific assignment. Members must complete 1700 service hours. Members must fulfill orientation, volunteerism and training requirements throughout the service year and attend all mandatory events. Members are required to perform weekly and monthly reporting. The work schedule is full time for approximately eleven months starting in early September.

Applicants should reflect a strong degree of aptitude and ability in their writing and analysis. Individuals should be innovative and committed, and sensitive to the plight of low-income clients whom they are likely to serve. Proficiency in English and various non-English languages is a plus. Bachelor’s Degree required.
