United Way is a channel for people interested in making the most powerful difference in their communities. Based on what we know to be the most pressing issues in our region, we strategically invest each gift in a range of programs that focus on and have shown measurable success in those areas. United Way is focused on three community priority areas:
While United Way of Greater New Haven (UWGNH) is part of the national United Way system, our organization is locally incorporated as a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization. United Way of Greater New Haven serves the towns of Bethany, East Haven, Hamden, New Haven, North Branford, North Haven, Orange, West Haven and Woodbridge. For over eighty years all decisions made by UWGNH have been overseen by a board of directors and various committees made up of local community volunteers and professionals. For instance, volunteer leaders make the decisions about how and where each gift is invested, not UWGNH staff members. Funds are distributed by committees made up of diverse groups of community leaders and trained volunteers supported by UWGNH staff members. This volunteer process adds community knowledge to each gift and ensures that issues here in this area are the focus.
