About United Way of Greater Portland

The United Way of Greater Portland Volunteer Resource Center part of the VolunteerMaine Partnership Network!

Serving Cumberland, Androscoggin and Oxford Counties.

The Volunteer Resource Center is an internal program of the United Way of Greater Portland. It serves as a community resource center on volunteerism and a gateway to volunteer involvement. The United Way of Greater Portland assists approximately 2,000 people annually in finding volunteer opportunities throughout Cumberland County. We work with agencies to recruit volunteers through this interactive web site. A specialized search may be printed for you at your request by calling the United Way of Greater Portland at 874-1000. Ask for the Director of Volunteer Development.

If you live in Androscoggin County or Oxford you may want to contact the United Ways in those counties for assistance.  Please see the left side of this page for the links to those United Ways.  Otherwise please enter the zip code of the area where you want to volunteer and available items will come up.

If you want assistance in finding just the right opportunity or creating a group opportunity call (207) 874-1000 ext. 318 or e-mail at Kstephenson@unitedwaygp.org   For Androscoggin and Oxford Counties please send e-mail to  unitedway@unitedwayandro.org

Services are provided to area social service agency volunteer directors through bi-monthly meetings of the Portland Area Volunteer Administrators (PAVA). PAVA provides professional networking and training for managers of volunteers. Through the Workplace Volunteer Council, the United Way of Greater Portland assists businesses that are trying to connect their employees to meaningful volunteer opportunities. In partnership with WCSH6 and TDBanknorth we promote volunteerism through the 6 Who Care Awards, the Mary Rines Thompson Volunteer of the Year Award and the Agency of Distinction Award.

On the third Thursday in May, over a thousand volunteers spread out across Cumberland County to participate in the United Way of Greater Portland's DAY OF CARING. Businesses, schools and service groups recruit volunteers to paint, fix up, create, clear trails, build fences for social service and non profit organizations throughout the county. Contact us by phone or e-mail if your group wants to participate. The deadline for volunteer registration is usually in March.
