It is the mission of the Plymouth Area Coalition for the Homeless, Inc. to educate, empower, strengthen, nurture, and assist individuals and families who seek shelter, food, and other basic necessities so that they may build on their strengths and experience their own potential as independent members of society.

Description:
Family Shelter Program
In addition to safe temporary shelter families residing at the program site receive support services to help them help themselves. Families are offered help with:

Time Management
Vocational/educational counseling
Housing search services
Nutrition training
Budgeting and finance
Training in independent living skills
Case management
Parenting education groups

The goal is for families to move from the shelter into safe housing they can afford. We help families to live productive, self-sufficient lives by offering opportunities to gain skills and enhance family living.

In addition, our facility provides two essential programs to residents of Plymouth County. Our Food Pantry is always open to those in need. Food boxes are given to families once a month and emergency assistance is always available. Secondly, we operate a furniture, clothing and household goods store at no cost to clients.

Our programs are funded by the Department of Transitional Assistance, FEMA, Private foundations, The Old Colony United Way, Project Bread and donations from community members and organizations.

History:
The Coalition began in 1985 as a result of a group of concerned citizens responding to families living in their cars or the state forest. The group raised support and opened the first shelter in a rented farmhouse in Halifax in May of 1987. A generous donation of land, building services and materials enabled the Coalition to custom build a facility to accommodate ten families at a time for shelter. The facility in Kingston also includes an office, child care center, food pantry, Santa's Workshop and the FAIR program.
