Long Term Care Ombudsmen are advocates for residents of nursing/rest homes. Ombudsmen help residents and their families and friends understand and exercise rights that are guaranteed by law,both at federal level and in many states. Ombudsman work to improve the quality of life for the residents in nursing and rest homes.

Description:
The Old Colony Planning Council Ombudsman Program encompasses 40 nursing/rest homes in 23 communities.These communities include Plymouth,Duxbury and Wareham to the south;Rockland,Hanover and Abington to the north and also Brockton,Stoughton and Middleboro. A person interested in volunteering with the Ombudsman Program would be assigned a nursing/rest home in their community and asked to visit once a week. Training is provided by the Executive Office of Elder Affairs.

History:
Old Colony Planning Council is the AAA(Area Agency on Aging).The Ombudsman Program is housed here. There are 23 Ombudsman Programs within the state.There are currently 4 staff(3 Part-time) and 14 volunteers who advocate for the nursing and rest home residents in the above named towns.
