Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Rochester
| Last updated on October 29, 2008 |
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Rochester matches children, ages 6-16, with caring adults in a one-to-one mentoring relationship. We are committed to recruiting, screening and training qualified and dedicated "child safe" Big Brothers and Big Sisters to help local youth realize their potential.
Description:
Adults from the community are matched with children in both Monroe and Wayne counties. By being a kid again, and doing activities that are fun for the child, as well as the adult, volunteers help a child find the way to a better future.
History:
Following the racial riots of the 60's, a group of women decided their children needed male role models, so they founded an agency known as Rochester Community Involvement. During this same time, another organization was developed to work with youngsters on probation, Volunteers in Partnership. As these agencies developed and grew, so did their common ground - children matched with volunteers. In 1978 they merged to form Community Partners for Youth, Inc. In 1981, the merged organization became affiliated with the national organization of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.
