Dimitri House helps the poor and homeless of the Rochester community. Our focus has always been to extend a loving welcome to all who come through our doors. We have been feeding the hungry and sheltering the homeless since 1985 and our greatest hope is to continue to do so, with dignity and love.
Description:
Dimitri House has three programs which help the poor and homeless of the Rochester community. Our emergency food cupboard is open 4 days a week, year round and we give food to individuals and families in need on a monthly basis. Clients need to live in our target areas which are 14604, 14605, 14607 & 14609. Hours are Mondays from 9:30-11:15 and 1:30 - 4:00 and Wednesday - Friday 9:30-11:15. Appointment is necessary. Our drop-in program is open 3 afternoons a week, year round. This is a program which welcomes adult men and women, homeless or not, to come in, have a meal and spend the afternoon in a safe and welcoming environment. Our guests are welcomed to use the phone, play cards, read or just visit with one another. We have peer advocates from Rochester Mental Health who can assist our guests with housing, health, benefits and other various issues. The hours are 1:30-4:30. Additionally during the winter months, we are open on Sunday afternoons from 1:30-4:30 for socializing and snacks. Our men's emergency shelter is open during the winter months only; November - April. We have seven beds - our guests arrive at 9:30 pm and leave at 7:00 am.
History:
Dimitri House has been in existence since 1985. We started as an outreach of Corpus Christi Church in the early 1980's, however we have been at this location since 1985. Our name comes from Dimitri Mamczur, a homeless man who was hit by a car and died in November of 1985. In 2000, we established ourselves as a separate corporation.
