Since 1984 Flower City Habitat for Humanity has worked to eliminate poverty and substandard housing in Rochester by building simple, decent, affordable homes in partnership with low-income working families, volunteers and donors/sponsors. FCHH has successfully contributed to the re-birth of some of Rochester's most devastated neighborhoods. More than 150 low-income families have achieved the dream of home ownership which has empowered them to make further gains and successes in their lives.

Description:
FCHH welcomes volunteers 16 years or older to assist for a full-day with various aspects of house construction Tuesday - Saturday, year round, rain or shine. Skills are not required, as Habitat construction supervisors provide on-the-job training and instruction. Volunteers directly contribute to a family's efforts to improve their lives through home ownership. Non-construction volunteers are needed in the ReStore (our home improvement reslale srote), office, on committees or the board, to assist with events and fundraising and to work on special projects based on interests and skills.

History:
FCHH is the Rochester affiliate of Habitat for Humanity, International, an ecumenical christian housing ministry founded in Americus, GA in 1976 by Millard Fuller. FCHH is one of the largest Habitat affiliates in the northeast, building approximately 10 homes per year. FCHH was founded in 1984 by Roger and Barbara Cross and has built or rehabilitated 150+ homes in the Marketview Heights, Upper Falls, Brown St., Fulton Ave. and Trust St. neighborhoods. Habitat families re-pay a 20-year no-interest, no profit mortgage. Monthly payments are approximately $425, not including utilities. Habitat believes homeownership is key to thriving families, and safe and stable neighborhoods. FCHH accepts no government funding and derives financial support solely through house sponsorships by faith-based groups, businesses and corporations, foundations and from contributions from individual donors. Donations of volunteer time, money, new building materials or services are welcome.
