Genesee Orleans Ministry of Concern

Last updated on September 24, 2007

The Genesee Orleans Ministry of Concern is the "agency of last resort" because it works with people who have nowhere else to go for help. The agency has two objectives; (1)to provide emergency services and (2)to assist and encourage members of the poverty community in becoming independent, self-sufficient, and contributing members of society.

Description:
The emergency services provided include temporary shelter to prevent homelessness, clothing, food, personal care items, utilities, prescriptions and support for medical assistance. The Follow Up Support program provides case management to help prevent further need for emergency assistance. The Tenant Certification Program provides educational assistance with securing and maintaining rental property. The Furniture Program accepts donated essential furniture items and matches them with request from the needy. The Just Friends mentoring program matches needy youth with a positive role model.

History:
The Ministry of Concern grew out of the Migrant Ministry committees of the churches in Orleans and Genesee Counties in the nineteen fifties. Migrant workers who settled in the area faced discrimination in jobs and housing. The Ministry of Concern worked with them and other poor people in the counties in helping them get their basic survival needs met and was incorporated in Albion in June, 1968.
