Meetinghouse Village exists to provide quality retirement living to seniors of modest incomes. The rents are deliberately kept below market rates, and rentals on one of our campuses is restricted to those whose annual income is below the median income established by the State of Maine for this area.
Description:
Meetinghouse Village is a sister community to one in Vernon, VT, which was established in the 1920's by a group from within a church who desired to provide low cost retirement living to retired pastors. From this beginning, we get our Christian foundation. While Meetinghouse Village is based on Christian values, it does not require any resident or staff to participate in any activities, religious or other, and in fact we have a wide variety of backgrounds and preferences among our residents. We see this as a healthy environment, fostering goodwill and openness. In our community residents have available to them a wide variety of activities, a hair salon, woodworking shop, individual gardens, pool table, two chapels, a resident chaplain, many common sitting areas, shared celebrations, and a caring community of people who extend themselves to each other.
History:
In 1993, the group in Vermont acted on their desire to serve more seniors of modest means by purchasing land in Kittery and opening the first section of Meetinghouse Village. In the next few years, wings were added and in 2002 a second campus was added. We now total 86 apartments, some in congregate buildings and some in cottage style buildings.
