Our vision is to build a museum exhibit on the history of the Franklin Block in and among retail stores and offices. We are looking for volunteers with great research skills and a high interest in history and/or the city of Portsmouth.
Description:
The Franklin Block is a 200 year old historic building in downtown Portsmouth. There is about 60 thousand square feet of retail and office space and a section of this space will be converted in an exhibit. Our goal is to tell the story of the Franklin Block mainly through the architecture and commerce which makes the Block histrical important to the city of Portsmouth.
History:
The Franklin Block was built in 1817 by Langley Boardman and in 1819 the Franklin Opera House was built. The building burnt down in the 1870's and was rebuilt in 1879 by Alfred Stavers. For 60 years, the Franklin Building housed numerous retail stores and offices to include a Dance School, the Arcadia Theatre, and much more.
