The FRIENDS Project's mission is to facilitate opportunities for friendships, social relationships and inclusive community connections for people with disabilities.
Description:
The FRIENDS Project runs a variety of fun, recreational programs for teenagers and young adults. Volunteers enjoy playing basketball, playing games, listening to music and socializing with a great group of young people with disabilities. Staff is always present for supervision, questions and direction.
History:
FRIENDS is a task force initiated by the Portsmouth School Department in 2000 consisting of parents, staff and community members. The group was formed because young people with disabilities are frustrated over the lack of friendships and positive relationships that they experience, causing isolation and depression. The FRIENDS Project is supported through grants, fund raising, and the Portsmouth School Department.
