The mission of Rockingham Community Action, a private, non-profit organization, is to alleviate and prevent poverty, and to promote self-reliance. We accomplish our mission by providing people with the tools and resources to help them overcome economic hardship, through advocacy and the effective delivery of comprehensive services, and in collaboration with individuals, families, and other community partners.
Description:
RCA accomplishes its mission through a comprehensive array of services, in such areas as: early childhood and adult education; self-sufficiency counseling; job search, readiness and training assistance; homelessness prevention; nutrition and health counseling; energy conservation and housing rehab.; recruitment and training of child care providers; and many others. RCA provides these services to over 8,000 households/year, through offices, centers and intake sites located in over half of the county's 37 communities.
History:
Rockingham Community Action, and other "Community Action Agencies" across the county, were started in 1965 during the War on Poverty. Each CAA is a private,non-profit organization dedicated to creating solutions to poverty in their local communities.

At the 3rd set of lights, go left (there's a car dealership on the right at that intersection).
After a short distance, the road ends at an angle. Go left.
You'll soon come to a set of lights; go right onto South St.
Go a mile or so; continue through the first set of lights (with the cemetary on the right.)
There are then 2 sets of blinking overhead lights; at the second one, go left onto Junkins Ave. You'll see the large brick City Hall Complex on the right.
Take the main entrance going up to the complex. RCA is located in the right-hand side of the main building. (There is a sign by the entrance listing the social service agencies.) We are on the top (third) floor. |
