The New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is a community resource center bringing animals and people together. We provide adoption, education, investigation, and sheltering services in a professional and compassionate way.
Description:
For 135 years, the NHSPCA has been committed to the prevention of animal cruelty and to educating the public about the humane treatment of domestic animals. Serving over 121 communities in Rockingham and Strafford Counties, southern Maine, and northern Massachusetts, our Adoption Center receives more than 2,700 unwanted, neglected, or abused animals each year. The NHSPCA is an independent, nonprofit organization that is solely supported by private donations and does not receive funds from government entities or ongoing support from national associations.
History:
The NHSPCA was founded in 1872 in Portsmouth, NH. The first official shelter was eventually established in Stratham, NH. In 1975, the organization purchased 6 acres of land in Stratham and erected a new facility taking in more than 600 animals that first year. In July 2001, the NHSPCA celebrated the long awaited opening of a new state-of-the-art Adoption Center. The 10,500 foot facility creates a positive, healthy and comforting environment for animals as they await new homes.
