The Homeless Center for Strafford County's primary mission is to provide safe overnight emergency shelter for single women and families during the winter months. A secondary objective is to empower the homeless through professional case management and/or as as referral service to help them live more self-sufficient lives.
Description:
The Homeless Center for Strafford County is a volunteer based 6 bedroom shelter for homeless women and families which operates during the winter of October through April. We provide a safe, warm, and hospitable place for women and families to sleep and eat two meals a day (dinner and breakfast). The shelter includes a medium sized conference room that we use to shelter multiple single females.
History:
The Stafford County Emergency Shelter Coalition was formed in 1998 to begin the planning and implementation of The Homeless Center for Strafford County. The coalition was comprised of local town and city welfare administrators, Strafford County Community Action, church leaders, civic groups, private citizens and other agencies serving the local homeless and low income population.
For the first 3 years we have operated a shelter out of the Salvation Army in Rochester, NH. In the summer of 2001 Waste Management of New Hampshire donated a former residential house turned office building for our cause. The City of Rochester assisted with the renovation of the facility. This has made it possible to expand services by increasing the service times and giving the homeless an increased sense of security and comfort. We opened our doors to the new shelter on December 03, 2001.
In accordance with the shelter's 501@(3) status, a Board of Trustees has recently been formed and many of the members originate from the coalition.
