We help middle and high school students with language-learning disabilities acquire the skills they need in order to be successful.

Description:
LSA is a private non-profit, full-time, day school, approved by the states of NH and MA for special education students in grades 4-12. The NH Department of Education also approves our general education program for students in all grades, allowing students to work toward a high school diploma. The NH curriculum frameworks and grade level expectations guide our instruction. Teachers are NHDOE certified, most have master's degrees, and many are certified as specialists in reading or learning disabilities.

Our students are intelligent and active. They seek high-quality instruction and want to be challenged. They want teachers who welcome divergent learners of all sorts. They want to turn challenges - attention deficits, hyperactivity, learning disabilities - into learning advantages. Some just want a small school that nurtures the individual and makes learning an experience to remember.

History:
Learning Skills Academy was created by a local father looking for a better education for his son. He wanted a school which celebrated strengths, addressed academic weaknesses directly, and brought the critical life skills of perseverance and initiative into the curriculum. He wanted a place where kids with learning disabilities could feel they belonged.

We began in Rye in 1985 and quickly grew from a half dozen students to nearly 40 students. At that point we had outgrown our facility in Rye, so we relocated to the old Sherburne Street School in Portsmouth. About 12 years ago, we constructed our own building in Rye. We are currently approved by the NH and MA Departments of Education to provide special education and related services to as many as 26 students .
